Low Speed ATM over ADSL and the Need for High Speed Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of modern technology from non-standard sources allows IT centres to find temporary solutions for operational needs, for example to provide access quickly to a networking infrastructure for the local scientific community. This paper describes the experiences of GWDG with ADSL equipment. Although originally a consumer technology it can also be used in a scientific environment. Despite of having some clear limitations, ADSL technology can be used quite well if other means are not readily available. In addition various networking issues that arise in a scientific environment are discussed, using the situation in Göttingen as an example.

ATM over ADSL probe in Telecom Italia environment
This paper covers access network performance analysis by deploying ATM over ADSL within Telecom Italia experimental department “EXANET” (Experimental ATM Network). In this scenario, data traffic leaves customer site as ATM traffic running over ADSL modem links, gets aggregated via DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) at the central office (CO) and then dropped onto the high-speed ATM switching fabric...
متن کاملATM over ADSL: The “Best-Effort” PVC Provisioning for ATM Call Flow
Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is the latest copper-wire access technology that has the capability to deliver data rate up to 8 Mbps in downstream and up to 640 kbps in upstream. The ADSL Forum has also defined the model for ADSL/ATM connections. ADSL can be connected to ATM core network through the access network called digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM). This paper ...
متن کاملOn the Design of an Integrated Management Platform for an ADSL/ATM based Access Network using CORBA
In this paper, we address the problem of the end-to-end management of a heterogeneous public network. In the case study, the access part of the network is based on the ADSL technology for the provisioning of high speed IP over ATM to the customer and consists of ADSL network elements and ATM access switches. The core of the network is ATM based and provides connectivity to retailers, which in t...
متن کاملSecurity for Broadband Internet Access Users
BROADBAND ACCESS METHODS High-speed access is becoming increasingly popular for connecting to the Internet and to corporate networks. The term “high-speed” is generally taken to mean transfer speeds above the 56Kbps of analog modems, or the 64 to 128Kbps speeds of ISDN. There are a number of technologies that provide transfer rates from 256Kbps to 1.544Mbps and beyond. Some offer asymmetrical u...
متن کاملModelling ADSL with IP and ATM Performance Study
This paper describes ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) simulation model developed using COMNET III. ADSL is integrated with IP (Internet Protocol) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) in order to provide QoS (Quality of Service). Using this model, a comparison study between networks using IP over ATM over ADSL and IP over ADSL is provided.
